Hot Spring County Medical Center News

To better serve our patients, as of September 20th, HSC Medical Center is offering all new private rooms on the medical-surgical unit of the hospital. The Auxiliary has provided funds for refurbishing and redecorating these rooms. Two rooms near the nurse’s station will remain semi-private and will be used for confused patients requiring close supervision.

Private rooms are also available in the rehabilitation unit and ACU unit, while mental health and the cardiac step-down remain semi-private. With the restructuring of the room status, HSC Medical Center will house a total of 72 patient beds.

Dee Schall, RN, Chief Nursing Officer, says, “There are several good reasons for the conversion to private rooms. With semi-private rooms, visitors had to be limited due to patients having a roommate. Also, nursing care for a roommate may disturb the other patient. With private rooms, our patients will have much more privacy and their families will be able to stay with them.”

Schall notes that private rooms provide a calmer atmosphere for patients which in turn promotes faster healing. In fact, recent research indicates patients do actually get better faster in a private room.

According to Phillip Gilmore, CEO, “Our physicians and our patients have asked for this conversion to private rooms and we are happy to be able to make this change on our medical-surgical unit at this time. Most of our patients prefer the privacy and comfort of private rooms when a hospital stay is necessary so we are pleased to be able to offer them that amenity.”

Over the past few months, HSC Medical Center has implemented two new programs aimed at assisting patients with the management of their hospital accounts. These programs not only help patients identify and qualify for healthcare financial assistance, but also benefit the hospital by reducing their outstanding accounts receivables.

Since HSC Medical Center operates solely off income from hospital services and does not receive any tax dollar support from city, county, or state, it is important for the hospital to receive payment for services rendered. Through the new programs, Complete Care and MASH, patients receive assistance in the management of their hospital account, as well as assistance in identifying financial solutions through programs such as Medicaid/Medicare, Social Security Disability, Supplemental Security Income, and Crime Victims Compensation.

Last June, HSCMC contracted with Complete Care, a billing and finance company, to work with patients to resolve account balances and establish payment arrangements when necessary. Patients who are unable to pay their account balance within 30 days will be allowed to pay over time with only a nominal interest rate (usually much lower than credit card rates). Complete Care will work with each patient’s unique circumstances and, when appropriate, can refer the patient for charity consideration.

Just recently, the MASH (Medical Advocacy Services for Healthcare) program has been implemented at HSC Medical Center. MASH is a company that provides expert knowledge of Medicaid, social security and other government programs to benefit the specific needs of our patients. An advocate has been assigned to HSCMC who has substantial knowledge of various public benefit programs. When a patient without a payor source for their healthcare is identified, the advocate will work with that patient to find an assistance program. That advocate will then follow the entire application process until it is resolved. MASH has assisted over a million patients connect to programs since 1988!

HSCMC Admissions Director and Financial Counselor Vickie Shuff says, “First and foremost, we view these new programs as a community service to our patients who struggle with the high cost of healthcare. In many cases, MASH will match patients with appropriate programs that will give those patients a payor source for their healthcare. At the very least, through Complete Care, our patients will have financial counseling to help them manage their hospital accounts. Obviously, the hospital benefits because we can potentially receive some reimbursement for services that might otherwise end up as unpaid accounts.”

During a CT exam, a patient lies on a table and is slowly moved into the large donut-shaped opening called the gantry.  Once inside, a series of x-ray beams create hundreds of cross-sectional pictures that represent slices of a patient’s body.  Seconds later, the system’s computer assembles the slices into three-dimensional images that are interpreted by a clinician.  McDaniels says that the new CT is so fast that it usually takes longer for the patient to be placed on the table than it does to do the actual CT study!

The staff of the X-ray department will be training and learning about all the new features of the CT for several weeks.  Several HSCMC technicians have traveled to Toshiba headquarters in California for special training prior to the installation.

Phillip Gilmore, CEO at HSC Medical Center, was recently honored as an AHAA Administrator of the Year at the annual Arkansas Hospital Association Auxiliary luncheon held in conjunction with the AHA annual convention in Little Rock.

Gilmore was nominated by Patsy McFarlin, President of the HSC Medical Center Auxiliary, on behalf of the Auxiliary membership.  Two awards were given from among a possible 63 nominations from statewide hospital auxiliaries.  Gilmore received the honor for an administrator from a hospital with less than 100 beds.

In the letter of recommendation penned by McFarlin, Gilmore was cited for the many improvements he has championed at HSCMC but especially for his sensitivity to the effect on the Auxiliary members as the hospital made changes toward their long term goals.

As an example, McFarlin described the move of the Pink Lady Gift Shop to a new location to make way for the By the Cup Café.  McFarlin states that “as a gesture of good will, the relocated gift shop was remodeled into a lovely store and the coffee shop was dedicated to the Auxiliary.” 

McFarlin also writes that Gilmore is never without a smile and is open and friendly to everyone.  “He makes us (the Auxilians) feel important and useful”, says McFarlin.  “We are very fortunate to have Mr. Gilmore at HSCMC and look forward to many more years of friendship with him!”

HSC Medical Center has become the second hospital in Arkansas to acquire Stryker second generation state of the art High Definition medical video technology.  The new HD system will assist surgeons perform the most delicate surgical tasks in minimally invasive surgeries where the video systems provide visualization of the patients’ anatomy.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is much less traumatic than conventional open surgery, as the surgeon only requires very small incisions in the patient’s body to successfully perform an operation. The surgeon uses an endoscope to allow the anatomy and operation to be viewed on a video monitor. MIS results in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times and reduced procedural costs.

The High Definition will allow the surgeon to more easily identify anatomical structures.  Additionally, the High Definition video generates a greater depth of view, or a 3-D effect as some surgeons have termed it, which allows the surgeon to perform the delicate instrument maneuvers more naturally and quickly.  These features improve the efficiency of the operative team and reduce the operative time, thereby shortening the period that the patient must remain under anesthesia.

According to Brent Fikes, RN, Clinical Coordinator of Surgery, the new cameras and scopes will be utilized in a variety of surgical procedures performed by surgical specialists to include gynecologists, orthopedists, urologists, and general and vascular surgeons.

The new HD video equipment was purchased as a result of a gift from the HSC Medical Foundation.  The Foundation supports projects and equipment needs that will benefit the hospital and its employees.  Gilmore says, “We appreciate the Foundation’s generous gift that enabled us to acquire this equipment and allow HSCMC to maintain a competitive place in the health care industry.”

Many wounds require special care to heal. The following wounds can be effectively treated: Diabetic wounds, pressure ulcers, gas gangrene, osteomyelitis, venous stasis ulcers, burns, crush injuries, arterial ulcers, radiation necrosis, and other non-healing wounds.

Based on individual requirements, treatment options for wounds may include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, compression therapy, vacuum assisted closure, therapeutic application of growth factors, and artificial skin grafting.

The HSCMC Wound and Hyperbaric Medicine Center will house two hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers, the first available in Hot Spring County. There is no discomfort during hyperbaric treatment; patients can rest, watch TV or sleep while they receive their care.

Dr. Sonia Williams will serve as medical director of the Wound and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, with three additional physicians certified and available to provide medical care in the center. Melony Schratz, RN, has been named program director.
